What John the Baptist sounds like on the surface does not square with the results of his ministry. He was not a crank, but a profoundly important prophet who highlighted our ability to change. At the same time, the other readings on Advent 3 highlight the possibility of Joy. Reconciling these two emphases, Fr. Allen uses the 12-step model as "a path to Joy."
