From Coercion to Persuasion

In the story of Elijah on the Mountain we are faced dramatic shifts of perspective, a journey of healing and learning and a call to leave "the dramatic" and live into the "ordinariness" of life.  In the midst of trauma, Elijah is confronted by the deep mystery of the divine life and learns there that persuasion is more powerful than coercion.  The irony of this text, so full of "sound and fury" is that it has become one of the foundational stories illuminating the centrality of solitude and silence in the life of prayer.
